Grain and variance

Pivot the book by segment, room category or booking window, and grade it against the active budget at the coarsest grain the two share.

Analytics gives you one number per window. This page gives you the same number cut by the dimension you care about — market segment, room category, booking window — and grades it against the active budget.

"Grain" is simply how finely the book is sliced. A property that has configured nothing is at the coarsest grain there is: stay date, and a single total per night. That is a working state, not an unfinished one.

Pivot the book#

  1. Choose a dimension in Pivot by. Stay date (total) is the unpivoted view.
  2. Set From and To. The window opens on the next ninety nights.
  3. Read the table: room-nights, bookings, ADR and revenue for each value of that dimension, ordered by room-nights.

The dimensions available are market segment, rate category, room category, booking window, length of stay, quantity group, stay restriction and cancellation policy.

注意

A dimension marked (inactive) is one your property has not configured. Picking it produces a single "—" row, because no booking has been classified against it. Which dimensions are active is part of the planning configuration, authored through the Open Hotel Protocols API rather than a settings screen.

The measures are the ones defined on Analytics, and they roll up: pivoting cannot change the total, only redistribute it. If a pivot's rows do not sum to the flat total, that is a bug worth reporting.

Grade the book against the budget#

Below the pivot, Variance — on-the-books vs. active budget compares the same window against the budget version currently active in planning, with the variance in nights and in revenue. A negative variance is coloured; behind plan is meant to be visible without reading the numbers.

The line above the table — Computed at … resolution — is the part that repays attention. Two series can only be compared where both are stored, so Nerve grades them at the coarsest grain they have in common:

  • Resolution falls back to whole months if either side is monthly, and a budget always is. So a daily book graded against a monthly budget is compared month by month.
  • Grain is the intersection of the two dimension sets. A book sliced by segment and room category, against a budget written by segment only, is compared by segment.

This is why the header says what it computed at rather than assuming you know: a variance table that quietly dropped a dimension would look like an answer to a question you did not ask.

重要

No active budget for the window means no variance to show — the section says so and stops. Activate a version in planning first; a draft grades nothing.
